UTERINE FIBROIDS: THE EPIDEMIC
We should understand most benign (that is....
non-cancerous growths) that arise in the
female reproductive system are caused by the
"same risk factors": whether they be ovarian
cysts, breast lumps, or yes, even Uterine
Fibroids!!! Again, my friends, I want you to
realize that most benign growths along the
Reproductive System, whether referred to as
cysts, lumps, or Fibroids, mostly arise from
similar causes. And it is these causes of the
Reproductive Growths that will be our focus in
this article.... So.... what about Uterine
Fibroids.... The FACTS are as follows:
·Uterine Fibroids primarily occur in women in
their 20's thru their late 40's
·at least 40% of American Women develop
Fibroids
·50% of Women with Fibroids develop symptoms
so severe that it can have a "major impact" on
their Quality of Life
·Fibroids can vary in number and size. Often
multiple fibroids arise over time. Physicians
performing surgery on fibroids have found as
many as several hundred tumors on a single
woman. Fibroids range in size from tiny
pinpoint areas of tissue to rare cases of
tumors weighing up to 25 pounds or more!
·Many women with Fibroids don't know it and/or
do not have any noticeable symptoms.
·Fibroids are benign growths (i.e.
non-cancerous) that can actually arise in
muscle tissue anywhere in the body but are
most commonly found in the uterus. Unlike
Cancer, they do not invade surrounding tissue
or distant organs, nor will untreated fibroids
kill the affected person. In fact, less than ½
of 1 percent of Fibroids ever become
cancerous.
·Amazingly, over 800,000 Hysterectomies (which
is surgical removal of the uterus and
basically "sterilization") are performed each
year in America, with 30+% of the
Hysterectomies being done due to Fibroids.
Equally amazing, we note that only 75,000
myomectomies (i.e. specific surgery to remove
only Fibroids, thus leaving the uterus intact)
are done.
·Finally, we note that African American Women
are 5 times more likely to develop Uterine
Fibroids than Caucasian Women.
What are the Symptoms of Fibroids?
1.Heavy Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
Approximately 1/3 of women with Fibroids
suffer from excessive Bleeding, where they run
the risk of
becoming severely Anemic or low in Iron
2.Abdominal PAIN and/or Swelling that may
cause:
·Pelvic Fullness or a dragging sensation
·Chronic Constipation due to interference of
Fibroids with Bowel Functions
·Frequent Urgency to Urinate due to Fibroids
causing reduction of Bladder Capacity
·Unpleasant Cramps due to inflammation of
surrounding tissue
3.Tenderness and Fatigue and wanting to eat
"ICE" due to severe Anemia or Iron Deficiency
4.Lower-back Pain due to Added pressure in the
Abdominal Area
5.Infertility Yes, Fibroids represent 5 to 10%
of the infertility cases because Fibroids can
inhibit implantation of the fertilized egg in
the uterine lining by altering transport of
the sperm, compressing the fallopian tube, or,
disrupting the lining of the uterus.
How are Fibroids Diagnosed?
Fibroids can be diagnosed in several ways.
Most commonly a preliminary diagnosis is made
through an abdominal and pelvic examination. A
uterus that contains fibroids will often feel
enlarged, with an irregular contour. The
uterus will probably have a hard, lumpy feel,
although some fibroids may feel more soft and
cystic. A diagnosis based on an abdominal and
pelvic exam is correct about 85% of the time.
Other conditions, such as an ovarian cancer or
cyst, a pelvic inflammatory mass, a mass
originating in the bowel, or even an early
pregnancy, may occasionally be mistaken for a
fibroid.
For further diagnosis, a pelvic ultrasound can
be done. This is a visualization technique to
identify lesions by their shape and density.
Fibroids have specific visual characteristics
on ultrasound that differentiate them from
cysts and other structures.
When bleeding is the main symptom of a
possible fibroid, the physician may take a
tissue sample of the uterine lining or
endometrium for diagnostic purposes. Once a
definitive diagnosis of the fibroid is made,
effective treatment can be instituted to
alleviate the symptoms, promote regression of
the tumor, and prevent more from forming.
The Question of Hysterectomy as a Solution to
the Fibroid Epidemic
Many people question why over 800,000
hysterectomies are performed in the United
States each year. Very few of these operations
are performed because of a life-threatening
situation, and it is likely that many of them
are actually unnecessary. Per capita, half as
many hysterectomies are performed in Great
Britain as in the United States, and American
women show no health benefits for their higher
incidence of surgery. Outside the United
States, very few hysterectomies are performed
for what doctors often term "quality of life"
reasons. Hysterectomy effectively and
permanently causes sterility, and this may be
a motive (conscious or subconscious) for some
women and/or their doctors. Financial motives
cannot be overlooked entirely, either. U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services
statistics show that far fewer hysterectomies
are performed under managed care plans, in
which doctors receive a set fee for their
services each year, than when surgeons are
compensated directly for each operation
performed.
While a Hysterectomy is a definitive "cure"
for Uterine Fibroids, many complications and
side-effects can occur also including:
1.Osteoporosis
2.Arthritis
3.Cardiovascular Disease
4.Depression
5.Memory Loss
6.Loss of Libido - "Sex Drive"
Clearly many women will tell you about these
complications personally, but these somewhat
Catastrophic Health Effects of a Hysterectomy
are not Advertised in the Media.
Risk Factors Associated with Fibroids
1.High FAT Diet
2."High" PROTEIN Diet
3.Diet High in Red Meat or even Chicken that
contains "excessive" or unnatural levels or
estrogen
4.Lack of Good, Regular Exercise that cleanses
the blood, oxygenates the blood
5.Diet Low in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
6.Consuming Foods and Medicines that contain
Methylxanthins including Caffeine, Tea,
Coffee, Chocolate, Soft Drinks, and Various
Drugs, because there is a Strong Connection
between Uterine Fibroids (and any Fibroids)
and consumption of Methylxanthins that
Prevents certain enzymes from functioning thus
resulting in a build-up of unwanted
biochemicals which when overproduced reside
and collect in a build up of Lumps, Tumors,
and Cysts especially in the female
reproductive system (namely breast, ovaries,
uterus).
7.Unmanaged or poorly managed STRESS -
Unresolved conflicts, Unrelenting, Prolonged
Stress, whether psychological or physical,
encourages the continual production of
steroids which inhibits the function of the
Immune System, thereby increasing the growth
of tumors, lumps, growths, and cysts.
8.Chronic Constipation and a TOXIC SYSTEM,
where we know that at least 80% of Americans
are constipated and TOXIC.
9.Smoking, 2nd Hand Smoke, and Alcohol
10.Poor Sleeping Habits
11.Refined Sugar and Fried Foods and Too Much
Salt: these are Hard on the Liver and tend to
overwork the LIVER which is the major organ
that cleanses and detoxifies our body and also
balances and manufactures hormones.
12.Birth Control Pills or any other Medicines
high in Estrogen.
Pro-Active Plan to Reduce, Reverse, or Avoid
Uterine Fibroids
1.Low FAT, High FIBER, moderate PROTEIN
Vegetarian Diet full of Fresh Fruits and
Vegetables.
2.Avoid Animal Protein especially Heavily
Laden with Estrogen artificially injected into
animals to promote unnatural growth.
3.Exercise Regularly: Aerobics, Weight
Training, Yoga, Tai-Chi (internal & external
exercises).
4.Avoid all Foods and Medicines that contain
Methylxanthins including Caffeine, Tea,
Coffee, Chocolate, Pop, and Various Drugs.
5.Manage Your Stress Well: Besides regular
exercise, Meditate, Yoga, Deep Breathing,
Prayer, Spirituality, Release, Forgiveness,
Relaxation, Laughing, Fun.
6.Cleanse (Regularly) your Colon and Liver
with enemas, liver flushes, coffee enemas in
severe cases, Liver and/or Colon Detox, Herbal
and Nutritional Formulas.
7.Avoid second hand smoke and traffic exhaust
fumes. No smoking or alcohol.
8.Get Good Sleep as this builds your "Immune
System" which your body can activate to
dissolve or combat fibroids, growths, cysts,
etc.
9.Avoid using any Birth Control Pills or
Medicines high in Estrogen.
10.Additional Dietary:
·Increase intake of B vitamin-rich foods, such
as brown rice, wheat germ and wheat germ oil
(4 tsp. daily), and brewer's yeast
·Add miso, sea vegetables, leafy greens to
alkalize and neutralize toxins. Eat diuretic
foods - cucumber and watermelon to flush them
out
·Have fresh apple or carrot juice every day
during healing
·Avoid: Saturated Fats, Dairy products, Salt,
Sugar
11.Vitamins, Minerals, and other Supplements
Helpful for Fibroids: Vitamin A, B Complex,
Vitamin C, Bioflavonoids (help regulate
excessive estrogen in the body),
Multivitamins, Zinc, Vitamin E, Iron
(especially to offset heavy menstrual bleeding
and anemia), Potassium, Calcium, and Magnesium
(to reduce cramps and menstrual pain and to
maintain normal muscle tone), EFA's (essential
fatty acids). Good Sources of EFA's (the raw
materials the body uses to produce what's
called "prostaglandins" which are hormone-like
chemicals that induce muscle-relaxant and
blood vessel-relaxant properties that can
significantly reduce muscle cramps and tension
and also have an anti-inflammatory effect)
are: Raw Seeds and Nuts, Certain Fish (salmon,
mackerel, and trout), Flax Seed Oil and/or
Evening Primrose Oil (especially Good!!!),
Germanium or Co Q10 for High Powered
Anti-Oxidants, Iodine Therapy (for 3-4 months,
more effective with Vitamin E, for underactive
Thyroid due to Iodine deficiency), L-Arginine
and L-Lysine (amino acids that enhance immune
function and may retard tumor growth).
12.Also, highly consider External Poultices
(Green Clay and Castor Oil Packs applied
Directly), Reflexology, and Massage.
13.Herbs for Uterine Fibroids:
Echinacea/Goldenseal to flush lymph glands and
stimulate immune system, Cramp Bark for Pain,
White Willow Bark and Meadowsweet to reduce
Inflammation, Shepherd's Purse to stop
excessive menstrual flow, Yellow Dock and Pau
d'Arco to prevent or reduce Anemia due to low
Iron and excessive Bleeding, Damiana to shrink
Fibroids by balancing estrogen levels.
14.Finally, be sure to get Regular
Gynecological Exams (to monitor your Uterine
and Reproductive Health!!! It is important for
us to realize that it is the "Early Diagnosis"
that gives "YOU" much more flexibility and
time to investigate Treatment Options.)
15.In closing, it is advisable to consider
getting Intravenous Chelation Therapy to
remove possible heavy metals, improve
circulation, and reverse atherosclerosis....
Chelation Therapy is a tremendous therapeutic
to help correct the perils of living in the
U.S. where most of us are subjected (at least
for a time) to the Standard American Diet
(high fat, high salt, high meat, high sugar)
and Environmental Pollution.
